  • The Movers and Shakers Summer Camp promotes the same values that are the cornerstone of Asheville Community Movement: teaching kids to be independent and conscientious community members within a fun and safe environment. We try to nurture the individual passions of our campers by devoting each week to themes that foster community spirit and sustainable living.

By sustainable living, we mean treating the Earth with respect, as well as yourself, your body and mind, and your fellow community members. Kids may choose from the provided activities based on their individual interests and comfort level, but regardless of theme, campers will participate in activities related to movement, team building, and conflict mediation – skills essential to living within a healthy community.

  • The Movers and Shakers Summer Camp is all about movement, both as a tool for fun and healthy development in the present, as well as a tool for individual development for the future. The habits we form in early life carry into our adulthood and beyond. As they find happiness in running, playing, and using their bodies, we hope our campers will cultivate a love for physical activity that will continue into later life. They are also given the opportunity to find their own personal strengths and passions by participating in a variety of group activities and self-motivated projects.

For the majority of the day, campers are grouped with their peers according to age, but they are also given the chance to work alongside campers from other age groups so that younger campers can find role models, and older campers can experience a new kind of responsibility by acting as mentors to their junior campers. All campers will learn to be active members of a community, finding confidence, security and comfort through social collaboration and a home-like atmosphere where they can be themselves.

  • Middle schoolers have different needs to K-8th children. In addition to participating in workshops and activities, these older campers will mentor younger children, be involved in community outreach, and participate in special field trips. We also believe middle schoolers need free time during the day to talk with their peers and practice self-direction in choosing the activities and projects that will occupy their time. And if they are interested in taking a more involved role in the camp, middle schoolers are eligible to apply for our Junior Counselor program if they have attended 3 months of ACM’s afterschool program or 4 weeks of our summer camp.

These opportunities are intended to spark interest in middle schoolers by giving them real stakes and responsibilities in their environment, continuing their development as active, engaged community members. We provide them the freedom to find their own passions, which we hope will follow them into adulthood, along with the skill for constant self-discovery that is so essential to a fulfilling life. This is in addition to the general activities detailed in the Movers and Shakers Summer Camp catalog, found below.
